Today is an anniversary. A sad anniversary. Like when people heard about JFK's assassination, or when the Challenger exploded (I watched that live in elementary school), one remembers where they were 12 years ago today.
I was in the Navy, assigned to the USS Harry S Truman (CVN-75). The Truman, was in the middle of shipyard overhaul in Portsmouth, VA. I was in the divisional office working on something when one of the officers in charge of the division came in and turned on the TV telling us we needed to see something. I then sat there for hours watching in horror. Work basically stopped.
I saw the second plane hit and both towers fall. I saw men and women jump to their deaths to escape the flames. I saw heartbreak and heroism. I saw the best, and the worst of humanity. I will remember that day for the rest of my life.
This is also the one year anniversary of more death by those same madmen who were behind so much tragedy. Benghazi. Forgotten by those in power, but not by those who remember.
Believe it or not, the first indication something was wrong in Benghazi came from an EVE player. I was not in the game at the time as I was on a rather long deployment, but I have since found out about this player and how much he meant to the community. I did not know Vile Rat personally, all my information on him comes from his eulogy made by those who knew him best and information from another site.
To me, this is indicative of the community EVE has. It is indeed heartwarming.
Rest in peace, all those who have lost their lives on this day, both in 2001, and 2012.
To everyone else, Fly Safe.
